Tony Mollus – Missouri
I am enclosing a few
pictures of whitetails that my son Jake and I have taken over the past
several years. These bucks were taken on property that we own with some
friends of ours and manage for quality deer hunting. One of the farms
borders a federal refuge and as you can imagine, this piece of land
offers great opportunities for big deer. The other piece of land
however, lies smack dab in the middle of what our local conservation
officers affectionately refer to as “Poachers Alley”.
This second piece of
property and the difficulties of maintaining and managing the deer herd
upon it were the reasons that we first became interested in your
products. We wanted to bring deer onto the property from surrounding
farms, plus we were hoping to keep our resident deer a little closer to
home in an effort to allow them to live long enough to grow into adults.
Most of the locals in
the area surrounding this piece of land scoffed at the idea of food
plots and quality deer management. They said that the only folks who
would benefit from our efforts were the poachers. Undaunted, we pressed
on. Imperial Clover and Alfa-Rack plots were planted and judicious watch
was set up over the property. We put a stop to the trespassing and
invited conservation department personnel to aid us in patrolling the
property against poachers. We then set aside 75% of the hard cover in
one continuous block as a refuge or sanctuary for the deer. We limited
hunting on the property to archery only for the first several years and
then only in conjunction with strict harvest limits.
It didn’t take long to
see the rewards of our efforts. By the second year, we were seeing
several times the number of deer that we had previously observed. The
deer were staying near the plots and utilizing the “refuge” that we
provided for them. By the fourth year, we began to hunt the land with
the intent of taking only bucks of at least 4 ½ years of age. Now in our
seventh year, we have kept all of our property enhancement measures in
place from food plots to restricted harvest of mature bucks and what was
once “Poachers Alley” is now a deer hunting paradise. The photo (1) of
the 5x5 with six stickers of over two inches represents our reward and
our commitment to the future. He was aged by a conservation department
biologist at 6 ½, and he has become proof positive to the locals that
QDM and quality food sources do produce big deer. I took this buck
within sight of one of our Imperial Whitetail Clover plots.
The 130 class 8-point
in photo (2) with my son Jake was taken the following day on the piece
of ground near the Federal refuge. After enjoying so much success with
your products at the other farm, we decided to plant them on both
properties. This buck was standing in the Alfa-Rack when the shot was
taken.
It is with great
appreciation that we offer you a heartfelt thank you for the help in
making our deer hunting dreams come true. We feel confident that without
your superior clover and alfalfa seeds, the outcome of our venture could
well have been far less positive. We always have and forever will
continue to preach the benefits of QDM and quality food sources, and the
quality of your Whitetail products has proven their worth to us.
