PowerPlant Q & A

Gives you more tonnage per acre than any other spring/summer annuals!

Q. WHAT IS POWERPLANT?

A. PowerPlant is an annual planting that consists of a mixture of warm season forages that work together to offer your deer ultra high-protein forages that can be planted in smaller acreages and survive relatively heavy browsing by whitetail. In the past, small plots of beans had almost no chance of survival because early pressure by whitetail can actually kill the stand.

Q. HOW LONG WILL POWERPLANT LAST?

A. Normally stands planted inside the recommended planting dates can last until the first frost in the fall. If you plan on using the same area for a fall planting, disk it up just before your normal fall planting dates and establish a fall/winter stand. But, if possible never eliminate all your food plots. Leave something for the transition period between fall planting and stand establishment.

Q. IS POWERPLANT BETTER THAN IMPERIAL CLOVER AND

ALFA-RACK?

A. PowerPlant is a completely different product. Imperial Clover and Alfa-Rack are perennials and PowerPlant is an annual. Both have advantages over the other. PowerPlant can be planted in more soil types. PowerPlant can be planted later in the spring if you are late getting started with your plans. PowerPlant gives your deer an additional source of high protein and diversity in food plots which is very important in antler production.

Q.  HOW IS POWERPLANT DIFFERENT FROM IMPERIAL NO-PLOW?

A.  It contains a completely different blend of seeds. What most customers do is test both products side by side and see which performs better on their land. Many field testers have seen advantages to having both products available.

Q. SHOULD I PLANT CLOVER OR POWERPLANT?

A.  PowerPlant is an alternative to clover.  Always base your planting practices using Imperial Clover and Alfa-Rack. Add PowerPlant to increase the forage diversity on your property.  You can also use PowerPlant in the spring if you have missed your planting dates so your deer do not miss the critical protein necessary for optimum antler growth. Another reason would be poorer soil conditions that might not support Imperial Clover or Alfa-Rack.

Q. HOW DO I PLANT IT?

A. Simply disk the soil thoroughly and add seed and fertilizer. Lightly disk to cover the seed one-half inch to 1 inch. Be sure not to get it deeper than one inch.

Q. HOW MUCH AREA WILL 50 POUNDS PLANT?

A. 50 pounds of PowerPlant plants an area between 1 ½  acres and 2 acres. In areas where deer populations are high, plant 50 pounds per 1 ½ acre.

Q. IS pH IMPORTANT?

A.  Always strive for the pH to be 6.5 to 7. If the soil pH is lower than 6, the plants may have difficulty with nutrient uptake. If PowerPlant is planted in lower pH soils, production will occur but it may grow a little slower than usual.

Q. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF ADDING POWERPLANT TO MY EXISTING PLANTINGS?

A.  It adds additional high-protein forage to your existing plots of Imperial Clover and Alfa-Rack. Offering top quality forage diversity can increase the carrying capacity of your land. PowerPlant produces over 30 percent protein and also provides good cover for bedding.

Q. CAN DEER OVERGRAZE IT LIKE MY SOYBEANS?

A. Yes, in areas where deer numbers are very high it can be over browsed. But in most cases over browsing is not a problem if planted at the right time and if enough area is planted. In high population areas plant 25 pounds per ¾ acre.

Q. WHEN SHOULD I DISK IT IN AND GET READY FOR A FALL PLANTING?

A.  You have two Choices: 1.  Leave it for cover and bedding and the deer will continue to eat the forage even after the first frost in the fall.  2.  Mow it down about two weeks before you disk for the fall planting. If possible, never remove all your food plots. Leave something for the transition between planting and establishment of the fall forages.

Q. IS IT DROUGHT RESISTANT?

A. As with any crop, nothing is completely drought proof but it is very resistant to dry weather. The critical time is the first few weeks after planting. If you can get good early rains it can withstand some pretty dry weather later in the summer. Try to plant as early as possible if good conditions exist in the spring.

Q. WHAT’S IN POWERPLANT?

A. PowerPlant is a blend developed at the Whitetail Institute. It contains four legumes that have an excellent chance of survival because they are blended with a palatable crop of forages that grow taller and can protect the other plants from overgrazing at an early stage that could eliminate them.

OTHER ADVANTAGES…

  1. Very fast establishment.
  2. Easy to plant.
  3. Produces over two tons of forage per acre, which is much higher than the over-hyped spring and summer blends.
  4. Can be used as a rotational plot with a fall annual product.
  5. Provides excellent brood habitat for turkeys and other birds in the early stages of development.
