It took six years for the Institute to develop the new turnip variety in TALL TINE TUBERS. The process involved repeated cycles of planting, cross-pollination, evaluation of the resulting offspring, harvesting seed from the best offspring and re-planting. Evaluation at each stage of development included planting offspring in plots available to wild, free ranging deer and then closely monitoring them for deer usage. Only the most attractive offspring were kept. Tall Tine Tubers is also highly drought-resistant and extremely cold-tolerant.
